Kolya was our dear friend and colleague since many years ago at JINR Institute in Dubna.
He was a great personality, very gentle and intelligent, ready to help and understand.
Kolya was an outstanding mathematician.
It is so unfair that Kolya passed away so early. It was so painful
when everything happened, and it is still hard to believe.
There are no words to express our sadness and sorrow that Kolya is not
with us, that we never hear his gentle voice by telephone.
He will always be in our hearts and memories.

As a "grandstudent" of Dr. Chernov's, he and his work were hugely inspring to me, and I've had many interactions with professors, advisors, and fellow students whose lives he had an amazingly positive impact on. Your life and accomplishments carry on in the hearts and memories of us all.

a scientist, I do not understand his work. For me he is a brother, a senior, reliable, always willing to help. Blessed memory!

Kolya was an outstanding mathematician and a truly kind human being. He gave so much to the field of hyperbolic dynamics and especially chaotic billiards, where he was one of the highest regarded people on the planet. He especially gave so much to his colleagues, young and less young, in terms of ideas, discussions, mentorship, teaching... He was always generous with his time and with his talents, as I've experienced first-hand many times. Though he was a rather shy person, everyone in the community was aware of his tremendous worth, as a scientist and as a colleague. Personally, the environment that he and a few other leaders created in the field of billiards is one of the reasons why I enjoy being in it. We all liked Kolya, and will miss him very much.

Through his teaching, but more importantly through his warmth and compassion, Dr. Chernov touched the lives of many of his students in a way that speaks to an inimitable goodness of character; he will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and pupils, and his noble legacy will be the example he set for us all, as a professor, mathematician, and as a person. He will always be missed.
I am deeply sad to hear that Dr. chernov passed away. It is a big lose for all of us.
Dr. Chernov was one of the best instructor that I have ever had. He will be always in our minds and in our hearts.

Ever since I know him, Kolya's influence has been essential for me. I learned a lot from him and
he helped me in many different ways. I am deeply shocked by the sad news that he passed away. I
will always remember his attitude towards work and life, and his wise and kind personality
remains with me in the middle of my heart.
Dear Kolya, Thank you so much for the lot of love, friendship, compassion, help, and wisdom you always gave us! Especially thanks a lot for the mirriad of brilliant mathematical ideas that you were so generous to disperse between us. It is still pretty hard to comprehend that you will not be with us anymore, at least materially. However, your ideas and the memory of your loving heart stay with us forever. Rest in Peace, Dear Friend!

I will truly miss Professor Chernov. He was not only my best teacher and PhD advisor, but also he was one of my best friends. Few months ago we were preparing to our next joint trip. He was planning to visit me and then we will go together to the beach and the mountains in NC. I still remember his smile and I can’t forget him. Kolya, you will be in our hearts forever…

unaware his cancer had returned, and am sorry to hear he passed away. I

student with him. I think it was a learning experience for both of us!
